In life we as people face challenges and adversities regardless of racial background, social status, or religious lifestyle. Some people face more difficulties than others, and the way people deal with their problems can vary depending on the people around them. Merriam Webster describes adversity as a state, condition, or example of serious or continuing difficulty or adverse fortune (Merriam). This is evident when comparing and contrasting the memoir The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls, versus the documentary Inocente which follows a girl named Inocente. Because where the protagonist's racial background, family environment and locations differ, there is a clear relationship between the two stories. As where there are many differences in the story, one of the most important differences is the way both protagonists handle difficulties. Both The Glass Castle and Inocente follow the lives of two young girls who both grow up in a life of poverty and both survive homelessness with their families. Both protagonists are victims of homelessness, selfish parents, and enormous shame. While there is a clear difference in how the protagonists are forced to deal with their situations, and there are clearly different perspectives for each protagonist. In The Glass Castle, where Jeannette Walls' family is poverty-stricken, there seems to be a certain kind of normality to her lifestyle. From reading the book one can theorize that Jeannette's father may be suffering from a psychological disorder, but unlike Inocente's father Jeannette does not face traumatizing abuse from her father. Indeed, both of Jeannette's parents seem to show and express love for their children in a somewhat...... middle of paper... g way, and seem to be very focused on her craft. Therefore, when she was given the opportunity to showcase her work, she did so with enthusiasm and positivity and witnessed, as Jeannette Walls did, success through her passion. As Harriet Tubman once stated: “Every great dream begins with a dreamer. Always remember, you have within you the strength, patience and passion to reach for the stars to change the world (Tubman).”Works Cited Inocente. Director Sean Fine. Perf. Innocent Izucar.
