Going into this semester I knew I would take the Fundamentals of Education course, but I didn't know what to expect. After 14 weeks of discussion, learning and exploration I realized that my passion for teaching was solidified. I have realized the reality and responsibility that comes with becoming a teacher and I am ready for the challenge. As future teachers we have the power to impact the lives of our students in so many ways. We have learned that a teacher must behave like the professional he is. At the end of this course there are questions I asked myself that I would have answered completely differently in the first week of this course. One question we face is what quality teaching looks like. It is very important to observe the way a teacher approaches the class. We know that the most important factor in the school context is the teacher. (PowerPoint professional) A teacher must be able to use the different educational philosophies that we have learned during this semester. They can have students who learn by doing. This is a pragmatic approach to things. Or they can incorporate behaviorism into their classroom. Quality teachers have high expectations for students of all backgrounds. They must be very organized and prepared and, above all, they must know the subject they teach. A teacher should involve students and give them a chance to get up from their chairs. Teachers need to create lessons for different students because all students work at different paces. Some students may learn a certain lesson better than another and should not be forced to continue working when they have already mastered it. The teacher should be able to provide all the answers… in the middle of the paper… they should be taught with a different approach to ensure that they get the knowledge provided to their other classmates. Over the course of these 14 weeks I probably would have answered these questions differently. I didn't know the importance of the teacher and the responsibility we have. I probably would have put all the responsibility on the student and said that if the student wants to learn, it is their responsibility. This is the wrong way to look at things and I'm glad I took this course with Dr. Artis to understand how much power a teacher has. I have learned that we may not be able to change the world as teachers, but we have the ability to change the lives of our students for many years to come. I hope to build on the knowledge I received in this course with my future education courses and become a teacher who can make great changes in the lives of my students!
