Discrimination can cause stress, anxiety and cause a person to have low self-esteem. African Americans are discriminated against more than any other race, so they experience the most mental problems resulting from the effects of racism. The effects of racism have had harmful effects on people as they make them victims of the so-called “slave mentality”, which makes them feel inferior to other races. When a person is mentally burdened, he or she lacks the ability to think or function at an adequate level. “Black teens who experience racial discrimination during adolescence are more likely to develop stress-related health problems that could put them at risk for chronic diseases later in life, according to a new study. Specifically, the researchers found that they were more likely to have higher levels of blood pressure, a higher body mass index, and higher levels of stress-related hormones once they entered their twenties. The psychological toll that racism places on adults has also been well documented, and racial discrimination has been repeatedly linked to hypertension.
