In many scenarios, it is the younger generations who represent the new times and challenge the old tradition to leave it in the past. Considering Chang's reading of “Hangzhou,” Shitai, the fortune teller urges Chanyi, the illustrator grandmother, to adapt to the modern generation where their “ideas of love and power” (Chang 103) will decide the faith of their future. Taken by surprise, Chanyi disagrees, rationalizes and remains silent on the matter. Similarly, Alice Walker refers to this reaction by echoing the illustrator of “Everyday Use” when informed of her daughter's name change from Dee to Wangero. According to Dee, it was a burden to have the name of the people who oppressed her” (Walker 318). This shows the reader that in both families, adaptation is required on the part of the mother.
