Topic > Ethical Deviance: The LAPD and the Los Angeles Riots

The Los Angeles Police Department's Rodney King beating on March 3, 1991 and the Los Angeles riots resulting from the verdict of police officers from the 29th April to May 5, 1992 are events that will never be forgotten. Both evolve around an incident, but there are two sides to the ethical deviance: the LAPD and the citizens involved in the Los Angeles riots. The March 3, 1991 incident is an event that the public nationwide has never witnessed. If it weren't for the accidental videotaping of the beating that night, society would never have known what really happened to Rodney King. What was even more disturbing is the mentality that the LAPD displayed to the public and the details of how this police mentality led to this particular incident. This type of ethical deviance is something the public hasn't seen since the civil rights era. Chief Gates, the head of the Los Angeles Police Department, and the LAPD did not know what consequences their actions would lead to. Moving forward in time to the verdict of acquittal of the police officers on the charges, public sentiment turned to outrage. The disbelief and shock of the citizens of Los Angeles sparked a gigantic riot that lasted six days. The riots caused 53 deaths and the destruction of numerous buildings. This is a true but disturbing story that exposes the ethical deviance of the LAPD and the Los Angeles riots. The two perspectives of the Rodney King incident are the LAPD and the LA riots. The first perspective of ethical deviance in the Rodney King incident is that of the Los Angeles Police Department. Police brutality has… half the paper… and what they were actually going through was real. I could never have imagined that the mentality of a police chief would be like this. It's an absolutely horrible way to do policing and goes against everything the current era of community policing stands for. Also, what I don't understand is how no police officer took a stand against the police chief and how this type of police activity was never reported and considered acceptable behavior. The reason I chose to also include the Los Angeles riots is because it shows a side of the story that many people simply don't discuss. The impression I received was that the revolt was considered justifiable. Both incidents are classic examples of how lack of proper ethics and leadership can lead to such tragic incidents. What's even sadder is that all these innocent people were affected, like Rodney King, businesses and 53 deaths.
