“In Time”The movie “In Time” is set in a world where time has become the currency. People ultimately use the time to survive, to pay rent and pay for food and goods. Once you reach 25, you stop aging but are genetically designed to only live one more year unless you can buy your way out of it. The people who live the longest are the richest people, they can live forever and are essentially immortal. The rest of the people living in the ghettos live day after day doing low-paid jobs, stealing or begging for time. When the clock on the person's arm hits zero, he or she dies. The time on these watches has become the universal currency; by touching the arms, a person can transfer it to another, or to or from a separate watch that can be shipped or safely stored in a "time bank". The country is divided into “time zones” based on the wealth of its population. We have a saying that a lot of people use today "Time is money", but in this movie time is literally money. “In time” is very closely linked to the theme of macroeconomics. This film raises many economics topics such as wealth distribution, labor force, scarcity, and inflation. It shows us how people look at the economy differently when the currency is no longer physical money and how there is a separation between rich and poor. The film highlights how scarce time is in this world. Everyone wants it, but there just isn't enough time to go around for everyone. The supply is low but the demand is very high. People can trade time, work for time, and steal time. In the real world, when someone works, they get paid on an hourly or weekly basis. They are paid by cash, check, or deposited directly into your checking or savings account. In the movie people get paid on time... in half a paper... they live and work rather than people who just give up. The people who give up will simply let their timers go off and die, but the people who want to survive will continue to work and do everything they can to live. In today's world there are people who are unemployed, homeless and can barely get food, if you put these homeless people in the world in the movie "In Time", they will 100% be much more motivated to get a job because if they can they won't die, they won't just be homeless. If they simply had to pay rent and worry about eating, people wouldn't be as motivated to work as they are when they work to survive. The main character will do a lot of overtime and extra work not only for food and water but to live. If this were true in today's world, everyone would work overtime and work as hard as possible to live longer.
