Antoni van LeeuwenhoekAntoni van Leeuwenhoek was a Dutch microbiologist. He was born on 24 October 1632 in Delft and died on 26 August 1723 in Delft. In the 90 years he lived, he did a lot for science. He is best known for developing his microscope and his work in cell biology and microbiology. Van Leeuwenhoek's father was a basket maker and his mother came from a family of brewers. He was baptized on 4 November 1632 and given the name Thonis Philipszoon (after his father). The name "Van Leeuwenhoek" comes from the street where he lived. He lived on the corner of the street, near the Lion's Gate. When Antoni was five years old, his father died. His mother remarried and ten years later his stepfather also died. Antoni went to school in Warmond and lived with his uncle. He later trained as an accountant in Amsterdam with the draper William Davidson. From an early age, Van Leeuwenhoek had a great interest in mathematics, astronomy, chemistry and physics. Subsequently, Van Leeuwenhoek married Barbara van Meij and moved to Delft in 1653. Together Antoni and Barbara had five children. Barbara died in 1666. Van Leeuwenhoek passed the surveyor's examination in 1669. He became executor after Johannes Vermeer's death in 1675. Van Leeuwenhoek and Vermeer appear to have been good friends. Van Leeuwenhoek is said to have served as a model for Vermeer's paintings. Van Leeuwenhoek is also said to have made lenses for Vermeer's camera obscura. Both of these things have never been proven. In 1671 Van Leeuwenhoek remarried Cornelia Swalmius, daughter of a preacher. Van Leeuwenhoek was declared with... middle of paper......Hooke's law by the city of Delft.
