The purpose of this assignment is to critique a role play and look at the positive and negative, which relates theory and knowledge regarding the use of communication and skills interpersonal, and how and when to use them verbal, non-verbal and paraverbal communication within the chosen role-playing scenario. The author will also discuss different communication models, how they use a person-centered approach to advise and interact, and how to best handle and approach a situation in the correct way. The role play chosen for criticism was Role Play 2, Barry had an appointment to see a counsellor, booked by his GP to discuss his drug and alcohol abuse problems and how the counselor could help him deal with his situation. The literature research conducted by the author on communication was broad and extensive and allowed the author to analyze the event to conclude what was good and bad about the scenario. Firstly, after conducting a literature research regarding communication and interpersonal skills, it was discovered that communication is defined by many as Burnard (1992) states, "communication occurs continuously between people, not only verbally, but also non-verbally, through gestures, facial expressions, tone of voice, and so on." However, Fielding (1995) argues that “communication is the transmission of messages from one person to another. These messages contain information and the sender of these messages intends to convey particular meanings to the recipient of the message. Heath, (1997) also claims that "communication occurs in various ways and at different levels of awareness". After reviewing the vast literature on communication and interpersonal skills, I found that good communication is critical to the nursing profession and plays a key factor in patient recovery, compliance and satisfaction. Therefore more emphasis should be placed on training and mandatory integration. home sessions in health and social care, as poor communication is a major factor in my role which can lead to mistrust, giving wrong diagnoses and different goals to achieve, which in my opinion is not a complete and seamless care package . Within my role I need to become more of an active listener to allow myself to hear the underlying meanings, not just the facts about how the message a patient/client is trying to portray.
