The meaning of the word feminist in the dictionary is people who support or support women's rights and equality. Hester Prynne is a very strong and honest feminist, because she did not follow the traditional role of women in the eighteenth century. "Extending the official cane in his left hand, he placed his right on the shoulder of a young woman, who thus advanced; until, on the threshold of the prison door, she repelled him, with an action marked by natural dignity and strength of character , and went out into the open air” (Hawthorne 36). He knows he was wrong but shows that he is not ashamed of what he did in front of people “and yet a haughty smile, and a look that was not ashamed and looked around at the his fellow citizens and neighbors” (37). He received no financial support from anyone. He used his skills to make money and raised Pearl on his own their scarves, and the minister on her sash; she adorned the child's hat; she was locked up, to molder and rot, in the coffins of the dead" (57). . Women had limited freedom, but Hester Prynne defended her rights and beliefs. Not only was she a feminist character in the book, but the people, their cultures and religions also made her so. In the book it is said that she is a beautiful, tall, thin and dignified woman. She is also said to be good at decorating and making clothes and helps the poor by donating clothes to them. She is not a woman who just sins and is proud of herself. Throughout the story, Hester Prynne tries not to sin and repents of what she did and helps…middle of the paper…and she was out of the country, everyone hated her. Even though she knows that everyone hates her, Hester never gives up on making people forgive her. Hester Prynne did many great things for people. He decorated people's clothes and donated his clothes to the poor. He earned money and supported his daughter Pearl. Hester Prynne may have been struggling financially, but she did it all on her own. Hester Prynne is a very courageous woman unlike other women of 1850. Because of Hester Prynne's characteristics, the book became a great feminist novel. Not only did Nathaniel Hawthrone not only invent the story through fiction, but he reflected the real society of his time in a novel that is The Scarlet Letter. The role of Hester Prynne, a strong and courageous feminist, in the story is one of the best elements that made The Scarlet Letter a great novel.
