Topic > Pyramus and Thisbe by Homer and Romeo and... by Shakespeare

Man possesses this brilliant tool called imagination which allows him to develop ideas and concepts that did not exist before. Although everyone's imagination is different, sometimes the same idea can be used and transformed into another person's work. This is the case of Pyramus and Thisbe by Homer and Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare. For the normal person, many similarities between the two works are evident. Some similarities between the lyrics of Romeo and Juliet and Pyramus and Thisbe are: the two pairs of lovers who want to run away together, the parents' ignorance on the subject and the lovers who kill each other thinking that the other was dead. The first way Romeo and Juliet is similar to Pyramus and Thisbe is the two lovers who want to run away together. With Pyramus and Thisbe, the lovers could not be together and therefore were willing to leave everything behind to be together for the rest of their lives. In the case of Romeo and Juliet, they were under a lot more pressure and stress before making a decision. After Romeo was banished, Juliet had to fake her death and then when Romeo came to get her they had to leave Verona and never return. Thus it is said in Act IV, Scene i, lines 116 and 117: "I will watch your awakening, and that same night Romeo will carry you from hence to Mantua." These words are spoken by Friar Laurence as he explains his plan to Juliet. This was supposed to get them out of Verona without anyone chasing her and bringing her back to marry Paris. Surely, the couples' decision to run away from their homes and leave everything behind was a common thought in their minds. Another reason why Romeo and Juliet is similar to Pyramus and Thisbe is their parents' ignorance and obvious dislike of their children's chosen partner. In Pyr...... center of sheet......ken from Juliet in Act V, Scene iii, line 170, “This is your scabbard; rust there and let me die.” She says this just before she immerses him in herself, killing herself to hopefully have eternal life with Romeo. Of course, the couple's suicide scene was similar to the others. The imagination is a wild and crazy creature that cannot be contained or limited, but only embraced and refined to its own specifications and thoughts. William Shakespeare was obviously inspired by perhaps the same thing as the author of Pyramus and Thisbe. What the influence was, we may never know. However, we will know that the authors were incredibly gifted and exploited the ability of literature to give their gift to the world. This leaves everyone wondering what inspired two different stories, very similar in plot, to the writers, and how the inspiration was passed down for thousands of years between the two men..
