Topic > Burmese Days by George Orwell - 977

In George Orwell's book Burmese Days, the relationship between the British colonizers and the colonized Burmese/Indians caused the decline of British imperialism in Burma. The relationships between John Flory and Dr. Veraswami, Ellis with the Burmese/Indians are used to explain the declining role of the English in Burma. The European Club played an important role in the power of the English and the reports in the book show how the natives had difficulty gaining power. The relationship between the Englishman John Flory and the Indian Dr. Veraswami is unique because Flory deals in a friendly manner. Unlike many of his acquaintances, Flory is more open to Burmese culture and has different ideas about imperialism. Flory and Dr. Veraswami often talk about British imperialism and both take opposing positions. Flory criticizes imperialism while Dr. Versawami is in favor of British control. Dr. Verasawami believes that the British are helping them and that imperialism has helped people become more educated and civilized. This is an example of how Dr. Versawami had a negative view of the natives and claimed that British imperialism was beneficial to the Burmese people. Flory recognizes that imperialism has a negative impact on the Burmese people, but is economically beneficial to them and the British. People like Dr. Veraswami who admired the British and believed that they were helping them with “a wave of modern progress” supported imperialism in Burma. There were also people like Flory who believed that "we weren't civilizing them, we were just making them dirty." (p.35) As tension increases between the British and Burmese people, more and more people begin to recognize the negative aspects of imperialism. The rela...... middle of paper......Kyin to prevent Dr. Veraswami from becoming a member of the club triggers a riot and creates tension between the English and the Burmese. These riots create greater hatred between the two groups, especially the Burmese, and this causes the power of the English to decline. People are angry at the English and no longer believe that the English are doing more good than harm. Although British imperialism technically ended the Common Wealth countries and, for example, although the French no longer own their colonies, they may have direct control over some aspects. of their past colonies and often continue to take advantage of these poorer countries. Furthermore, Burma has recently had problems, so analyzing the relations between colonizers and colonized during its time as a British colony can allow us to better understand the current conflicts that are occurring..
