Topic > The Solution (pt 2) - 850

It is necessary to stop or at least slow down overpopulation, otherwise all our resources will start going to the parish. According to Professor Krisin Johnston, “Not only are there more of us, but we are consuming more – and this consumption is directly related to the endangered state of the planet: wild animals and wild places are disappearing; pollution of land, air and water is increasing; and radical climate changes are affecting weather patterns around the world” (Largen, 13). This is why it is important to find a radical solution such as eliminating the elderly population. Many people will resist this solution because they believe there are other ways to deal with this threat. Over the years, new inventions have been made to slow down overpopulation, such as contraceptives and condoms. Howard Kainz, stated that “motivated only by ideology…European countries have arrived at such low birth rates and their existence is threatened by contraception” (Kainz, 7). For this reason, many people believe that contraceptives are useful in stopping this global crisis. Several countries such as China have already adopted the one-child policy, which means that families will not be able to have more than one child; and families could be fined if they have more than one child. Laura Fitzpatrick published an article in Time in which she states that “Depending on where they live, couples can be fined thousands of dollars for having an extra child without permission” (Time.Fitzpatrick). The reason for this was that it would help control social, economic and environmental issues. Another reason why people would oppose this solution would be that they don't want to see their family member get eliminated, even if it's for the greater good. All... half of the paper... 28.
