In Shakespeare's Macbeth, Lady Macbeth's desire and ambition lead to her final downfall. When Lady Macbeth learns of Macbeth's prophecy, she dreams of the glory and high status that awaits becoming queen. She cannot hold back her ambitions and is willing to manipulate fate to fulfill Macbeth's prophecy. He calls upon the evil spirits to be filled from head to toe with cruelty to carry out the evil deeds necessary to make Macbeth king and to remove from his heart all remorse and pity for his action. She initially manages to get involved in the treacherous actions necessary to quickly fulfill the prophecy, but as the show progresses, the weight of the ruthless actions fills her with remorse. The remorse and pain she feels for her evil ways causes Lady Macbeth to lose control of her life and wither until the weight of her actions causes her to die. Lady Macbeth's wish is partially granted, her mind becomes evil and allows her to do horrible things, but her soul remains pure and unsure of her actions and remorse for her evil ways leads to her destruction. Lady Macbeth invokes evil spirits, asking them to fulfill her extreme cruelty and feel no remorse or pity for her victims. She asks evil spirits to grant her these evils so that she can take on Macbeth's prophecy to keep him from backing down: "Yet I fear thy nature; / It is too full of the milk of human kindness / To capture the nearest way." (1.5 16-18). Lady Macbeth uses the word milk to personify Macbeth's weak caring nature. She believes that Macbeth is full of ambition and desire, but she also believes that he is too secretive to attack when given a golden opportunity. Lady Macbeth dies before she can see the final failure of Macbeth's loss of kingship. Lady Macbeth is granted the extreme cruelty she desires from evil spirits, but evil spirits do not remove Lady Macbeth's soul. Therefore, her wish is partially fulfilled. She is able to do the terrible things necessary to make Macbeth king, but she becomes restless afterward actions and his internal struggle culminates in his death. His wish was expressed with the intention of making Macbeth king, and for a short time he will be king.
