How did the Nazis kill so many people? This question is important because somehow the Nazis managed to kill over 6 million Jews during the Holocaust. During the Holocaust, the SS deployed Killing Squads which were characterized by their tactics, important dates and their impact on the Final Solution. The Killing Squads managed to find a quick kill tactic. This is a crucial part of the argument because understanding how the Killing Squad kill could show why they were able to kill so many Jews, Gypsies, and Communist leaders. Killing Squads were also called death squads, mobile killing units and Einsatzgruppen. Death squads were often composed of German SS and police personnel (USHMM). This means that the death squads had some military experience. Death squads act quickly, usually striking the Jewish population by surprise (USHMM). This is also why they were called mobile killing units. Death squads entered cities and rounded up people, usually in large open areas. In open areas it is easier to dig mass graves than to put the dead. After the victims had handed over their valuables to the death squad and undressed, they were gassed in vans, shot in trenches, or shot in prepared pits (USHMM). People gassed in vans were killed by the carbon monoxide produced by the van because the exhaust pipes were blocked. The results of this research reveal the harsh tactics of the extermination squads. The teams don't care how the Jews died, as long as it was cheap. There are also some dates when huge numbers of Jews died. This is important to the topic because it shows the devastation that kill squads can cause. During the invasion of the Soviet Union in June 1941, death squads followed the German army. Their orders were to destroy all Jews, Communists and Gypsies. “By the end of 1942, over a million Soviet Jews died” (USHMM). That's a very large number of people dying in just six months. According to the SS report Karl Jaegers, 137,346 Jews were killed in the summer of 1942. Almost all Jews in small towns in Lithuania are killed. 35,000 survivors are put into forced labor (USHMM). There was no positive outcome for the Jews. Either die or be put into labor. The facts and figures show the enormous number of Jews killed. The kills would be even bigger if the time frame were to increase. The presence of the death squad had a decisive impact on the Final Solution.
