Imagine moving to Japan when you are seven years old. Growing up in the military I saw a lot of the world. Japan, however, is the most memorable to date. You see, when you're a child everything is new and exciting to you, even more so when you think you're going to see things you only see on television. I'm talking about ninjas, samurai and shoguns. I was going to see everything. I would discover that there was more to Japanese culture than I knew at the time. It was 1989, I had just turned seven when I found out I would be living in Japan for a few years. I had enjoyed watching samurai films and ninja films, I knew I would love Japan. On the plane ride over there I was asking my dad all the questions in the book about people and whether I would see ninjas. His response was to the point that if you see them then they're not good ninjas, right? Upon landing at Yokota Air Force Base I realized that my thoughts about Japan were completely wrong. There were no Samurai to welcome us, no ancient castle in the background, I had been robbed. After a few weeks of nothing, Dad came to us....
