Topic > Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare - 649

William Shakespeare wrote the tragedy of Romeo and Juliet around 1591 and included many monologues and soliloquies to add emotion and create drama. One of these soliloquies is that of Juliet who talks about her pain at Romeo's punishment. This soliloquy adds strong emotions and creates a depressed mood. Before this speech in Act I we learn that the Capulets and Montagues are arguing and that Romeo and Juliet fall in love. But Romeo is a Montague and Juliet is a Capulet. In the second act Romeo and Juliet get married. In the third act Tybalt kills Mercutio and then Romeo massacres Tybalt. For this Romeo is banished from Verona. Juliet now enters her speech. In the fourth act Paris plans to marry Juliet and the Friar and Juliet create a plan and Juliet drinks a potion that will make her "die" but she will wake up in two days. His body is found in the morning. In the fifth act Romeo kills Paris and then commits suicide in Juliet's arms. Juliet then wakes up and stabs herself. Their bodies are found and peace reigns between Capulets and Montagues. In Juliet's speech she uses repetition, similes, and repetition again to show emotion and create a depressed mood. Juliet uses repetition in her soliloquy to present her emotions regarding Romeo's exile and Tybalt's death. At the beginning of the speech Juliet does not believe that Romeo is a bad person because he killed Tybalt. Then he says that Romeo had to kill Tybalt or "That wicked cousin would have killed my husband:" (3.2.101). This sentence explains that Romeo had no choice. Either he killed Tybalt, otherwise Tybalt would have killed him. Juliet then goes on and says almost the same thing “My husband lives, whom Tybalt would have slain:” (3.2.105). This time Juliet says it in a joyful way and not... middle of the paper... it will be a happy night but suddenly Romeo has been banished and they can't see each other. Juliet keeps questioning the exile and every time she says it, it gets worse and worse until she thinks it's worse than death “All killed, all dead. 'Romeo is banished!'” (3.2.124). Juliet now thinks that Exile is worse than death and is extremely sad because she has realized that she cannot be with Romeo. Repetition is used in this speech to show emotion and create sadness. To create emotion and create a mood, Shakespeare uses repetition and a simile in Juliet's speech. These devices correspond to the theme of the play, young love, because they show Juliet's love towards Romeo. This speech adds to the show because it adds emotion and drama. The speech also highlights the young love of Romeo and Juliet and how young love is a fragile thing and can be easily broken.
