Over time he becomes a popular communist. Ho Chi Minh was a visionary in North Vietnam and would not stop until he united South and North Vietnam. In an effort to unite them he led North Vietnam into war against South Vietnam. His quest for a united Vietnam was fueled by his determination, intelligence and courage. (Duiker 15-577)May 19, 1890 Ho Chi Minh was born in a small village, Kim Liem, in central Vietnam. His birth name was Nyuyen Sinh Cung. Raised in poverty, he attended school in Hue. Ho Chi Minh became a teacher and then left Vietnam in 1911 to work on a French ocean liner as a cook. After World War I he moved to France, becoming a socialist and Vietnamese nationalist. In 1919 he petitioned for civil rights in France; he then went to the Soviet Union to study revolutionary methods. While in the Soviet Union he joined the Comintern, a Moscow-based group that planned to spread communism throughout the world. The Comintern assigned him the task of spreading communism throughout East Asia while living in the Soviet Union and China. After the start of World War II he returned to Vietnam. During this period he obtained the name Ho Chi Minh which means "he who enlightens". In 1945 the Viet Minh captured some of Vietnam's major cities and declared Vietnam independent.
