“Cheating Culture: Why More Americans Are Doing the Wrong Things to Get Ahead”IntroWhen Professor John Doe assigned me this reading assignment, I didn't I really had no idea which academic book would appeal to me. I definitely wanted to choose a book that would have a long-term impact on me and that I would benefit from. When I told my brother about the book, he said he was just finishing a book called "The Cheating Culture, Why More Americans Are Doing More To Get Ahead" by David Callahan. When he quickly explained to me what the book was about, I knew it was the book I was going to read. I thought this would be a good choice, because everywhere you look these days you see rip-offs. This book was published in 2004, so even though it is ten years old, I believe many of the examples in the book are still problems, if not worse today than they were ten years ago. Weather it's kids at school, athletes or the average businessman. Everyone cheats and tries to take shortcuts to get ahead. Almost everyone has cheated in their life, whether you would rather admit it or not. By reading this book, I hoped to find out exactly why so many people try to cheat and what alternatives they could take to avoid cheating. Review I was really looking forward to reading this book because since high school, when reading novels was a required assignment, I hadn't really sat down to read a book, much less an academic book. I was looking forward to learning and possibly using this book in a future interview. The book begins with David Callahan addressing the national problem we have with cheating. To discuss cheating culture, the author uses research findings from many disciplines such as: economics, political science......middle of paper......n little things, like asking others what they have understood on certain questions in math class and little things like that. The main reason I do this is because I sometimes doubt myself and want to be reassured by other peers. I even cheat on little things from time to time because I know the probability of getting caught is small and the punishments aren't that great. Even though I try not to cheat as much as possible, sometimes I make mistakes and it just happens. Reading this book really taught me that if he is likely to cheat on something small, in the future he is more likely to cheat on something bigger and something that would have bigger consequences if discovered. Also, reading this book will help me in an interview. Many times during an interview I will be asked if I have read any good books lately. I now have at least one credible academic book that I can say I have read.
