Security and Privacy in Social Media Technology has made tremendous progress over the past decade and seems to advance at a rapid pace every day. Social media is growing just as quickly. Social media is an interaction between individuals who wish to exchange information, photographs and ideas in different types of networks. Social media users include people of all ages. These people have different experiences, they have different cultures and they have different technical skills. (Brandtzaeg 1008) Social media depends on network-based technologies to generate the network that users can share. Social media includes everything that has to do with the Internet. Using the Internet, users can communicate with people locally and globally. People are no longer forced to travel across the world to experience another culture. This can be done with social networks. The types of social media today come with many different types of communication such as social blogs, wall posts, songs, photographs, and podcasts. Communication between users is informative, interactive and also educational. However, unfortunately, most social networking sites track all interactions that take place and this is an Internet privacy concern for Facebook, Twitter, Google and other social media users. Not only do they track all user interactions, but they also own all content, including images uploaded by users. The social network retains this information about the user, even if the user deactivates their account on that particular site. Most users have no idea that the network service operator stores this information and has access to all images and tags. Not having adequate security... half the paper..., which can lead to decreased productivity. An employee may spend more time viewing their friends' posts and photos, rather than focusing on their work. Social media can be addictive for some people. This should be monitored by all entrepreneurs. Employees may attend a party where people take photos and the images may be misinterpreted or distorted. Online reputation concerns can be critical for businesses and their employees. It can lead to job losses, economic losses and unforgivable social humiliations. Businesses are at another disadvantage when using social media because followers can post negative comments on the company's Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram site. Additionally, a hacker can retrieve the company page and publish false information. The reputation of a company or organization will suffer due to these actions. (Oravec 97)
