Organisations around the world have been investing a large part of their resources in employee training and development for years. Training and developing employees means impacting them with relevant knowledge and skills so that they can use them to drive organizational performance. This is done to make their work more efficient and be able to adapt to upcoming trends or be able to multitask. Training is mostly about a specific job or task and is short-term, while development is long-term and includes general operations. Training on the other hand is technical unlike development which is more theoretical. Many for-profit organizations have as their ultimate goal increased productivity which translates into greater profitability. Bearing this in mind and the immense benefits they bring to organizations, many are still reluctant to invest in this endeavor (Gratton 2007). This paper will look at the benefits of training and development for businesses and employees and delve into why some organizations and individuals are reluctant to invest in training. Benefits of Employee Training and Development As previously mentioned, employee training and development has numerous benefits for both the company and its employees. One of the main advantages is that it results in greater productivity and therefore greater profitability. Employee morale improves, which makes them identify more with the profit path and specific goals of a company. By improving performance the company creates a positive image in the process (Boxall & Purcell 2007). This in turn gives it a competitive advantage over its rivals, thus being able to acquire a sustainable market leadership position. In the course of training employees better relationships are created between... middle of paper... which requires a huge capital outlay and stakeholders are quite skeptical of such expenses, but in the long run it lasts a long way of help an organization succeed in the increasingly competitive business arena. Companies aiming for widespread growth and a sustainable market presence cannot achieve this unless their workforce is ready for the challenge. This preparation, on the other hand, is facilitated by organizations that enroll their employees in training. Employees become more productive after training and organizations benefit greatly, as argued in the paper. It is therefore up to management to adopt the right policies for their company. Training and development will see an organization support its manufacturing and service delivery initiatives through increased productivity, quality assurance and increased profitability.
