Topic > Introduction of new technologies into healthcare

IntroductionMedical professionals and patients are faced with the introduction of new technologies into healthcare in order to increase access to healthcare, reduce costs and improve the quality of services provided. These technologies are changing and challenging traditional healthcare. (Chaudhry B. et al., 2006). The implementation of these technologies has introduced new opportunities to transform the patient's role. Patients become better informed and more autonomous, responsible and active in their own care. (Nagel G., 2005)Aetna Medicaid follows health technology trends. One of the company's ways to adapt to the evolving healthcare system is to introduce a secure web portal for providers and patients. (Aetna Medicaid, 2014b) According to Ms. Rhiannon Yandell, Information Systems and Data Analytics Manager at Aetna Better Health of Illinois, the portal is an application developed and owned by Aetna Medicaid. Aetna Medicaid subsidiaries, such as Aetna Better Health of Illinois, share the application and databases, but use different environments. The Aetna Medicaid IT department is responsible for creating and maintaining the application. The application allows providers to communicate directly with health plans. Specifically, users can check current member eligibility, search for providers by name, specialty and location, check billing status, and submit authorization requests online. Furthermore, suppliers can be informed online about the status and payment of a claim. On the other hand, the application offers the opportunity for patients to securely connect with their providers and case management staff...... middle of paper ......f Aetna Inc .The company will be included among the visionaries in terms of technology adopters. (Chasm Institute, 2014) The company is motivated to increase the quality of services provided by any technological means. The development department is responsible for introducing new ideas and increasing the efficiency of the existing toll while supporting the rest of the department, as Ms. Yandell mentioned. On the other hand, he continued, the company has some pragmatic characteristics, as it negotiates with third parties to obtain the best application for the needs of its employees and customers. Additionally, the substantial increase in employees in the health plan's information management and data analytics department in the short two-year period appears very promising in terms of expanding the use of IT at Aetna Better Health of Illinois.
