The problem in the book “Reconstruction in Philosophy” was that people in previous years upheld tradition and values through past experiences. Instead of calling it “memory”, we call it tradition, in the book Dewey states that values are rooted in social traditions. In memory there are two factors that must relate to each other, the values which are the traditionally conservative factor, we must conserve what we appreciate, the second factor is the facts, we must know how to progress. Tradition was kept at a very high level compared to facts where they were never connected because people were not open to change, because they followed memories of past history. Past civilization, past history and past religion followed, it was more tradition and little science involved in the thoughts. People didn't question life, they just followed what everyone thought was right. Dewey gives an example of Socrates in the book “Reconstruction in Philosophy” and explains how Socrates tried to put thoughts and values together but due to old traditions his new way of thinking was not accepted by most, eventually leading to his death. In the second chapter Dewey introduces the philosopher Francis Bacon; Bacon thought knowledge was the most important factor, but he preferred new knowledge to old knowledge. Dewey states that Francis Bacon is “the great forerunner of the spirit of modern life”; embrace change, the world changes and the old tradition of the people no longer fits the new world. We have to change our values because the old tradition does not adapt to the new values. We have to adapt the way we think, adapt and change the way we think to changing situations. This addresses the issue of why philosophy needs to be reconstructed, as time goes by things change, ... middle of paper ...... Our ability to be flexible in our thinking and adapt it to new situations is how we change in modern society. Changes in thoughts and actions create solutions, make a difference to other individuals and to society. Thought alone cannot make any progress, but if you apply thought and action to solve problems, you can bring about change. The experimental method teaches people how to use science and relate it to facts and values as a way to reach solutions to problems. The action of talking, thinking and drawing conclusions, responding and providing feedback also improves the relationship. This method works in every aspect of our lives; we use this method when we establish relationships with others. When we learn from past experiences and work together, we can relate to each other, we can learn from each other and improve our understanding.
