Topic > Her Lover - 1049

Stories have different aspects from other forms of writing which would make them a short story where the elements are: setting, plot, characters, conflict and theme. All these characteristics are essential to create a story and stand out from other types of writing. In the story "Her Lover" all these characteristics are shown throughout the story and the requirements for such characteristics are met. However, not all of these requirements need to be met to create a short story as the setting and/or characters could be described vividly and paint a broad picture. The point of view of the story also does not change as it remains first person from beginning to end, a change of point of view would mean that the story is not a short story. The story's setting takes place in an apartment building where both main characters reside, as shown in the quote "I lived on the top floor and his attic was across from mine." (Gorky 163). Both the weather conditions and the time are not explained in the story, but it is predicted that it took place in modern times and that the weather conditions would have changed according to the atmosphere of the story, for example towards the end it would rain to express the sadness for Teresa's death "Later, about three months after this story began, they put her in prison for one reason or another. No doubt she'll be dead by now." (Gorky 166). The characters' daily lives seem to be casual, both "Mr. Student" and Teresa seem to have no jobs or school, they just seem to be in the apartment complex all the time doing their own thing. At the beginning of the story the atmosphere seems to be bright and calming as not much happens, but then as I'm... halfway through the paper... what if it doesn't? It doesn't exist, but it could! I write to him and he seems to exist. And Teresa, that's me, and he answers me, and then I write to him again...." (Gorky 166). All these characteristics were shown throughout the story and were fulfilled: the setting was described, the characters are painted a picture in the audience's head, the plot shows a stable plot, the conflict goes hand in hand with the plot and the point of view remains the same throughout the story is basic but the main point of the story as it influences much of the character's actions. "Her Lover" has similarities to the other tales as they all had some Russian influence and follow the elements of an encountered tale and is also different from other types of writing..
