Topic > The Movie Drive - 1436

Car chase movies have always been popular in Hollywood. Classics like Smokey and the Bandit, To Live and Die in LA and Bullitt all contributed to the action genre. The movie Drive, however, used car chases in a film that drew inspiration from the action genre, romance genre, and detective genre of films. The film is a depiction of the life of a man known only as "The Driver". The film follows him as he tries to balance his life of crime, with his love of cars and driving, and even an attempt at romance. The film follows the driver and details his daily life as a stuntman, mechanic, and getaway driver for criminals. The driver meets his neighbor Irene and her son Benecio and begins to bond with them. He learns that Irene's husband is in prison and is expected to be released soon. After her husband, Standard, is released, the crime bosses immediately want payment to keep him safe in prison. The driver, having deep feelings for Benecio and Irene, offers to help. Things go wrong, Standard is killed, the Driver is on the run with the stolen money and is furious at being framed. The film follows her quest to make things right, however this causes a rift between Irene and the Driver, and at the film's conclusion the audience never knows what will become of the relationship. In Drive the camera, soundtrack casting and style come together to create a fantastic film that details the criminal underworld, corruption and romance. The first scene that I believe shows the brilliance of this film is the very first scene of the film. In the scene the driver is shown leaving the house, picking up a car and driving to a dark place. The driver then proceeds to wait for two thieves and drives them through the streets... middle of paper... he does things for a good reason, but they are bad things like murder and theft. The opposite of Gosling in Carey Mulligan, a woman with delicate and polite features, who makes the audience believe that she is exactly what the Driver needs. The audience can feel the need they have for each other. He needs her care and she needs him as a good boy. Drive is a beautifully shot film, with an interesting plot and an amazing soundtrack. The film does a good job of giving off a retro vibe to pay homage to classic car films, but it also carves out a niche of its own as a fast-paced, romantic crime drama. Through its clever use of cinematography, setting, soundtrack and use of color, Drive offers a fascinating look at one man's life and the romance he desires and also how that romance ends inadvertently to throw him into a vortex of corruption and greed..
