SummaryIn this article I will talk about Roman numerals, a system that began to appear in the early 500s BC. This system consists of symbols used to represent different numbers, most of these symbols have a meaning behind this has to do with the use of the hands. Just as we have rules in our system, these also had their own rules that needed to be followed. They developed a way to write numbers more broadly by placing bars in different places when writing a number, this meant that the number was multiplied by a certain amount. Addition and subtraction is a method like the one we use today, but they had their own way of solving it. Roman numerals did not include zero in their system because presumably it was not necessary. Roman numerals began to appear in the early 500s BC. This system was developed to communicate. Some of these symbols have a meaning behind them, such as the number "I" which is a finger and represents the number one, "V" which is the number five as our hand forms a sort of V starting from the thumb to the little finger. “X” means ten and since five plus five equals ten and if you put two Vs together they make an X. “M” comes from the Latin “mille” which means one thousand, “C” also from the Latin “centum” which is one hundred. It's really impressive how the Romans invented their system, they simply applied knowledge and imagination by looking at their own hands. Just as every system has rules, there are also very important and basic rules for Roman numerals that must be followed. The numbers go from left to right, the only numbers on the left that can be subtracted are “I”, “X” or “C”. You can only subtract one number, for example if you are trying to write twenty-seven you cannot write it like this, XXIIIX...... half of the sheet...... it would be enough to add a line at the beginning and another line at the end. The lines indicate that the number is multiplied by one hundred. Here is the same number multiplied by one hundred._______| XVIII | This is the presentation of the number 1,800,000 as the number now has three bars, which means that in total it is multiplied by one hundred thousand. In my opinion, knowing Roman numerals is very important because we still find this system in our daily lives today. Every time we need to know the time we turn around and we might see an analog clock with Roman numerals. We find them in textbooks as the information we are reading is categorized and the same during a test that contains multiple questions. When we watch TV they appear at the end of a movie or TV show, we also see them in sports like the Super Bowl.
