Topic > How Bayard Rustin Influenced the Civil Rights Movement

Rustin was giving a lecture for the (AAUW). American Association of University Women, when her “Lude” act was committed. Although Rustin did not commit an actual lewd or lascivious act, at that time any public display of homosexuality was illegal in every state and was punishable by criminal charges. Rustin did not allow this accusation to affect him and in a few years after his release from these charges he opened up about his sexuality. Newly embracing his gay pride, Rustin began to fight and advocate for gay rights, incorporating them into his fight for African-American civil society.
