Poetry is a great way to express someone's feelings. Great poets write poems about events and situations they could never have imagined (Epstein 4). “Cavafy's achievement was in some ways to write outside of time, anchoring his writing as firmly as possible within time” (Epstein 4). In the year 1911 Cavafy produced “Ithaca” (Ithaca), which was one of his best poems, at the age of forty-eight (Epstein 3). This poem is truly the one that captures the reader's mind and makes him reflect on life. This poem translates into real life situations that many people will face or have faced. CP Kavafis was a Greek poet who lived in the ancient city of Alexandria. He was the youngest of nine children (Epstein 1). “Cavafis lived in England from the age of 9 to 16. The collapse of the family business brought him back to Alexandria, where he worked as a journalist and then as a civil servant for the Egyptian Ministry of Public Works” (Timpane 1). Kavafy grew up with a French tutor and an English nurse at home (Epstein 2). “Skeptical, he denied or ridiculed the traditional values of Christianity, patriotism, and heterosexuality, although he felt uncomfortable with his own nonconformity” (Cavafy1 1). Kavafy was extremely discreet about his personal life. After his mother's death he became more open (Timpan 2). Kavafy died at the age of seventy due to laryngeal cancer. He did not have a collected edition of his poems, nor did he leave instructions for having one (Epstein 2). “Constantine Kavafy became one of the most important figures not only in Greek but also in Western poetry. Cavafy was his own harshest critic, publishing only about 200 poems” (Cavafy1 1). “Cavafy had a splendid instinct for capturing the perfect historical detail that demonstrated continuity… middle of the paper… fantastic wisdom you have acquired, with so much experience/you will surely have understood by now what Ithaca means” (34-36). The moral is don't go crazy when you get to the end; it's just the beginning of his new life. People learn so much on journeys and "Ithaca" does what it was meant to do: guide each person through life and help them achieve more and have the greatest life adventure possible. The poem reflects on how his mother helped him in everything he did. In the last stanzas Kavafis talks about how he has gained wisdom and experience. His mother played a very important role in his life and that is how he gained that experience and wisdom. Once she died her poetry became more open. CP Cavafy is truly one of the best poets who can capture the mind of a reader and take him on the best adventure that could have ever been imagined.
