Have you ever imagined climbing onto the roof? Have you ever imagined walking straight up a wall? Well, if you've made your dream come true, it may not be that far away thanks to new technology discovered by Gecko's. The new technology is actually not that new, it was only recently discovered by the human race, so we consider it new, but in reality it has been around for millions of years. The secret to the gecko's ability to climb walls is really complex, it starts at the molecular level, with what they call a spatula, it's a nanohair about 200 nanometers wide and tall (Robert Full 2000). The putty knife is so small that you can't see it with the naked eye, but it creates a relatively strong force for its size, and that's what makes it climb up walls and ceilings. The force that is created is actually a weak force, but because this force is so small a Gecko's foot has hundreds of millions of these spatulas, and because of millions of these hairs it creates a force equal to 4x107 μn which is about 40N per foot (Robert Full 2000). Since this seems like a tiny amount, per foot is only 100 mm2 (Robert Full 2000). Imagine if this was just for a 100 mm2 human foot and that is about 10,000 mm2, which is one hundred times the force per foot of a gecko foot, then you would produce 4,000 N per foot (Robert Full 2000). What is the reason behind the "stickiness" of a gecko's foot? According to Robert Full, who has his degree in gecko feet, and cockroach feet are created by the Vander Der Waal effect, it might be as little as 0.4 μn per fur (Robert Full 2000), but if you look closer there there are about hundreds of millions of these nanohairs and there are so many of them that they quickly add up to a very powerful force (Robert Full 200...... middle of paper ...... the hairs are amazing, there are so so many applications these could be used, for example, by simple, transparent hangers for extreme burn victims to cover the wound. The potential of nanohairs however will not stop at simple things like that because they could eventually reach aviation technology and/or could even be used in aviation. aerospace industry. military for secret missions. The technology would never have been discovered if it were not for geckos and Robert Full. Because of those two, it may have never been discovered, and will now help greatly improve human life before or then the human species could being able to climb walls and walk on the roof trying to be like Spiderman. As stated earlier, the main thing the technology could be used for is firefighting robots and/or paramedic robots to save people from places a human cannot reach
