Topic > The desire to perpetuate the purity of children

In The Name of the Wind, Patrick Rothfuss writes: “When we are children we rarely think about the future. This innocence leaves us free to have fun as few adults can. The day we worry about the future is the day we leave our childhood behind. Children live in a world full of innocence, ignorance and happiness. They are untouched by the corruption of the world; therefore, naivety is preserved. In JD Salinger's The Catcher in the Rye, innocence is shown through the pond and Holden's desire to be a “catcher in the Rye”; through Phoebe, Allie and Sunny for their adolescence; and through the carousel and the Natural History Museum for their conservation. In the novel, Holden Caulfield establishes the theme of preserving innocence due to his hatred of deceitful people. Preventing and protecting children from persisting into adulthood demonstrates this innocence across the pond and Holden's desire to be a "catch in the rye." When Holden questions Horwitz about the ducks, Horwitz responds, “…fish…live right in the damn ice. They get frozen right in one position... Their bodies absorb nutrients and everything, right through the damn algae and shit in the ice. They kept their pores open the whole time” (75). The frozen pond resembles moral offspring. Their mortality is perpetuated because they are frozen in place. The fish represent Holden for his preservation in naivety, because he is stuck in the pond of purity because he hates fraudulent people. Being fixed in a pool of purity refers to being saved from adulthood by maintaining the mortality of children. As Phoebe and Holden argue about what Holden likes, he remarks, “…gotta catch everyone if they start falling off the cliff, I mean…half of paper…too much . It's all about sex... But I don't think it should be everywhere, where children are exposed to everything sexual. Because they must have a certain innocence; there is simply no innocence left. Children are shown and taught things they shouldn't learn. They are virtuous students who need to learn the good things in life, not the terrible ones. They are exposed to the cruelties of life instead of protected from them. Children need to enjoy the life they have now, while maintaining their naivety; because being pure allows you to become what you are. They are not dishonest, but they choose to have integrity. No matter how many times innocence is preserved, it will most likely be lost to the corruption and cruelties of the world. Therefore, children should be protected from the evils of the world.
