1375-1400. This story includes many aspects of magic and mystery. Sir Gawain is a knight in the court of the Author King. During a feast, a mysterious, huge man dressed all in green, including his green skin and horse, challenged the Author King. Sir Gawain takes his place and accepts the challenge. The Green Knight proposed that he might take a beating, but he would return the favor in the year to come. Gawain used his one blow and cut off the Green Knight's head. To their surprise, the Green Knight raised his head and spoke. “For that scalp and skull now hung from his fist; he turned to the noblest one sitting at the table and he opened his eyelids, looked straight ahead and uttered this speech, -” (Sir Gawain and The Green Knight ln.444-447). He said that Sir Gawain must come to see him within a year, otherwise he would be considered a coward forever. Sir Gawain will not only have to face a magical and immortal man, but he will have to embark on a mysterious journey to find him. On his journey Gawain is multi-layered and lost, but begins to see a glittering castle hidden by magic. “He stood and gazed upon the side of that fortress as it glittered and shone among glittering oaks, –” (Sir Gawain and The Green Knight ln.771-772). He seeks refuge in this castle when he meets the queen of the castle, who is later revealed to be Morgana the witch, sister of King Author. He used his magic to disguise himself. She gave him a magical belt that would protect him from harm. “For the body that is bound within this green girdle, as long as it is fastened upon it securely, will be safe against anyone who tries to strike it, and all the cunning of the earth would not see it slain.” (Sir Gawain and the Green Knight ln. When Sir Gawain finally found the Green Knight, the belt protected him from the fatal blow.
