The twentieth century brought many new innovations to the technological world and changed the way we live forever. Technological advances change the way we communicate, learn and think. With this transition to a tech-savvy lifestyle that everyone is attracted to, there are also many drawbacks. The digital world is addictive and the invention of the smartphone has led to many side effects such as sleep deprivation. Many studies have been done to prove this and that is why it needs to be addressed. Constant connection to the world through a digital device has allowed humans to feel beholden to this so-called lifeline. Since it has this effect, it consequently forces you to use it at all times of the day. With its attractive bright light, endless possible gadgets and instant communication with the world, it attracts people, even in the dead of night. This is what is killing society as we know it today. Nighttime use of smartphones negatively affects the proper communication, learning and thinking of human beings and, in turn, deprives them of much-needed sleep. In this topic I will define important related key terms, discuss the many issues associated with this problem, and conclude with some solutions to address the problem. The smartphone is powerful in its attractive appearance and capabilities, but it is not the light that comes from this device that sucks everyone in. We are all human beings and have instinctive patterns in our brains due to our biological background. For example, we humans wake up during the day because sunlight is what signals the brain to wake up the body and feel alert. To...... middle of paper ......g who is delicate and must do the same to stay healthy, it is important not to disturb him by going directly from active daylight to a completely quiet state in darkness. To help answer this problem, Michael Herf, the creator of the online photo sharing software Picasa, came up with an inventive solution. He developed computer software known as f.lux “that automatically alters the intensity and spectrum of light emitted by the display based on the time of day” (Gale). This technology would benefit the smartphone-dependent daily worker and prevent any decline in sleep quality and productivity during the day. The benefits of sleep are way overrated and, as stated by Kshamica Nimalasuriya, preventive medicine doctor, “restful sleep is known to reduce stress, strengthen the immune system and sharpen memory”..”
