Kylie Bergeson The Homework Debate: Too Much Homework! Are the teaching methods used in schools today obsolete? Students spend 6-7 hours every weekday sitting in a chair while knowledge is “skewered” into their brains; Students are therefore expected to complete hours of homework. A student should be allotted no more than 10 minutes per grade level per NEA guidelines. The NEA is the National Education Association. Over time, the load of homework sent home to students increased. The amount of homework assigned to students should be reduced because it causes stress, has no correlation with improvement, and takes away from well-deserved free time. Over time the homework load assigned to students increases, causing stress. The average hour spent on homework per week is approximately 6.8 hours (average hours spent on homework). Spending 6-7 hours in school is enough (Wallace). Why should students spend their time at home doing more schoolwork?
