At first glance, the reader could not imagine a more incompatible and diverse couple than Blanche DuBois and Fernie Mae Rosen, two women with very contrasting backgrounds and racial positions. However, these two women share similar passions and mental disorders, showing both their vulnerability to the world and each other's personal energies. Both weave an alternate reality within their psyche that tricks them into believing life isn't worth it, yet both seem to experience life at various sexual and emotional extremes. Such compatibility shows the correlation in their mutual lifestyles despite incongruous backgrounds. It seems that men are always at the root of their problems, despite their clear and recognizable negative reactions towards the opposite sex. Examples of a virginal aura that eclipses their sexual promiscuity, their mutual hatred for the world and the people around them, and their transformation from passion to true madness show the reader that they have more in common than one might think .Both Fernie and Blanche have a peculiar effect on men, attracting them in some way without seeming interested in any romantic or sexual action; this paradox attracts many lovers who later feel a strange attachment to these women. A parallel can be drawn with the creamy whiteness of Fernie's mulatto complexion and Blanche's name meaning "white" in French: both women inherently possess the illusion of virginal virtue that overlays their overt sexuality. The unnamed visitor from the North to Crane described Fernie's eyes as those that "desired nothing that you could give her... [but] men saw her eyes and were deceived" (Toomer 648), creating a sequel of mass of men who after having had relationships with her become ob......middle of paper......stay close to those around them. Mental illness does not discriminate between gender, age or social status and it becomes very clear that both of these women are lost when it comes to providing themselves with a stable and healthy lifestyle. Fernie and Blanche encounter a common enemy in men everywhere, men who want only to use them and abandon them, but in the process become so enraptured by their charms that they end up destroying both women on the inside. Their passion is toxic, yet both women seem to remain chaste and virgin with each new man they meet, starting the process all over again and dooming themselves completely. In a perfect world, there would be no need for these women to continue their relationships with men, but since both are equally addicted to what destroys them, the reader must sit back and watch as they both completely self-destruct..
