Niroshige ll, “Thirty-six Views of Tokyo” is made in the Ukiyo-e style which during the Edo period was a way for craftsmen to gather en masse to produce the their work of art. Ukiyo-e is the woodcut technique, Ukiyo-e has different themes. It consists of Bijin (beautiful women of the pleasure district), portraits of actors, famous landscapes and Asobi-e (erotica). The Nihonbasi “Thirty-Six Views of Tokyo” is made in the tradition of the Landscape, depicted in the title of the print. Landscape prints normally depict a beautiful place in Japan that Chonin would like to visit, the artist Utagawa Hiroshige ll uses techniques to portray the subject of the work, which is a harbor and coastline which helps to portray a sense of depth and access to the " Thirty-six views of Tokyo." Because the subject of the print is so easy to spot, the composition of the print is not as easily visible. There is a lot going on in the print which conveys a sense of chaos at first, perhaps there is a bridge, a coastline with buildings, boats and a staircase of some kind right in the middle ...
