In Sidewalk, sociologist Mitchell Duneier presents the findings of his research on life on the sidewalk by staying and working on the street alongside other vendors over a period of time. Working on the streets Duneier learned that respect plays an important role, that people on the street need respect to stay on the sidewalk. Respect allows Duneier to successfully carry out his research, determines how people will be treated, and helps maintain order on the sidewalk since all people related to the sidewalk, including even pedestrians and store employees, want to be respected. Mitchell Duneier began this research in the 1990s in New York. Sixth Avenue was a place where numerous vendors and panhandlers, mostly blacks and other minorities, earned money every day. Vendors had to sell magazines and books they could find (purchased from street cleaners or found themselves in dumpsters) and beggars got up and sat on the sidewalk and asked passers-by for change. There were also many other types of "jobs" on the street, such as street cleaners, movers, and warehouse workers. Duneier wanted to find out more about life on the sidewalks, so he decided to work on the streets alongside vendors and beggars to get first-hand experience and have the opportunity to easily interview people who work on the streets. Respect is vital. to Duneier as he needs the full approval and cooperation of the vendors to complete his research in order for Duneier to finish his research. Because Duneier is extremely different from the people who work on the streets in many ways (he is a rich, educated white sociologist who didn't have to worry about anything growing up), he must gradually gain respect. of paper ......estroom because “[his] body and clothes were dirty, smelly, and smelled of liquor” (177). Ron didn't want to influence customers in the businesses, so he decided not to use those bathrooms. Ron was an alcoholic and a drug addict, and he knew that when he was drunk he could disturb a lot of people and cause a lot of inconvenience if he chose to go into businesses and use the bathrooms. No matter what kind of person you are you want to be respected in some way, and that's why respect is important throughout the book. Duneier, people working on the streets and people affected by street workers all need mutual respect, but their motivations are a little different. Although there is still some discrimination and stereotypes against people working on the streets, if they try to reach people and respect them, the stereotypes could slowly disappear..
