This led to slaves fighting in wars, fighting for their freedom. Slavery in the United States thanks to the Thirteenth Amendment. The Fourteenth Amendment (1868) made former slaves citizens, they would have equal protection of the law. making them equal, remaining faithful to the laws. In 1896 the Supreme Court ruled that governments could discriminate/segregate people of different races, but the separate facilities had to be equal. In response to this situation loopholes were created, such as the Poll Taxes in 1890, African Americans were denied the right to vote with taxes. Saying that taxes had to be paid first, before voting, and that voters were subjected to tests. voters who could be rejected based on their skin. these were…half the charter…for human rights. he was one of the most influential African Americans. After the assassination of two very influential men, it was proven that they were achieving something. What does being American and living in America entail? I can choose the job I want, have a good education, I can vote, and this above all means being free and proud. All these groups demonstrated to show their opinions and to achieve equal rights in America. With African Americans, women and Mexican Americans were further represented among the poor, and slowly gained more political positions; they have taken effective positions in anti-discrimination legislation, to obtain greater respect for their culture.
