In A Raisin in the Sun by Lorraine Hansberry we see the positive and negative effects of pursuing the American dream. Hansberry expresses his different views on the American dream through characters and portrays the daily struggles of a 1950s black family in A Raisin in the Sun. In this comedy, he is able to effectively show the big impact that even small decisions they can have on a family. Hansberry shows the many different attachments that come with achieving this American dream. In A Raisin in the Sun, each family member has their own pursuit of happiness, which is accompanied by their own American dream. In the play, Mom has her own American Dream that she chases, which heavily influences the family's state of being. Mom faces many difficulties and much frustration as she chases her American dream (Bloom 17). Mother says: “Yes, death has come to this house here... Enough, come and walk in my house. On my children's lips. You the one who should be my start again. You the one who should be my harvest” (Hansberry 134). He begins to see the harsh effects of what his American dream has done to his children. The mother goes through trials and tribulations to provide a good lifestyle for her children, but neither of them seems satisfied, both want to achieve their dreams and aspirations so much that it blinds them to the reality of what is truly important in life. carrying such a heavy burden on her shoulders trying to keep her family together robs her of the happiness she once had. The mother appears to be the dominant presence and the head of the family. She has moral strength and dignity and that is why she is considered the stronghold... the center of the card... the support of the family unlike Walter. Every family member has the dream of improving the family situation; however, all of these dreams depend on an insurance check that begins to cause problems and tension within the family (Bloom 18). However, all of these dreams rely on an insurance check to be funded. In A Raisin in the Sun, each family member has their own pursuit of happiness, which is accompanied by their own American dream. Mom wants to have a better quality of life for her family. Beneatha aspires to become a successful doctor and an independent woman. Walter wants to invest in a liquor store and live in luxury. In A Rasin in the Sun, we see that each character goes through their own struggles and frustrations to achieve their American dream, but in the end, they all find their happiness in each other united as a family..
