In a futuristic American society, Guy Montag is a firefighter who burns books. In his world, firefighters don't put out fires, they start them. People don't read books, go out or socialise. Instead they watch a huge amount of television. Montag's eyes are opened to life when he meets Clarisse McClellan, his seventeen-year-old neighbor. He finds her unique because of her love of nature and people. Montag experiences unfortunate events. On the day Montag misses work, Beatty, Montag's fire chief, shows up at his house. Beatty tells Montag that it's normal for a firefighter to feel this way and explains why the books were banned. He says groups would objectify books that offend them and writes that they would write similar books to avoid offending people. But this was not enough and the company decided to eliminate them completely by burning them, rather than maintain a permanent conflict. Beatty tells Montag that he has 24 hours to read his books and turn them in, so Montag begins a long night of reading. Frustrated with reading, Montag turns to Mildred for help, but she prefers watching television and doesn't understand why he would want to risk reading books. He remembers meeting Faber, an English professor, in the park, and realizes that Faber can help him understand books.
