Topic > How Our School System Is Broken

There are major reasons why this topic has become a problem, one of which is that we are not preparing our children for a modern future. As mentioned in the video, our school system has not changed for hundreds of years. British author, speaker and international consultant Ken Robertson said that “education is fashioned in the interests of the industrial age and in its image,” which means we still have the mentality of the industrial age. All students do in school is sit and listen to instructions, but in today's world we cannot go very far with instructions, our modern age values people who can be creative and communicative. Get an original essayWe are born with curiosity, we begin to wonder about the sky, about the stars, about what makes the world go round. But as we progress into middle school, all this curiosity is squashed and throughout school we learn through facts and memorization. Children begin to believe that memorization is knowledge, but it is not. The reason this continues to be a problem is because no one understands the meaning of the tests, we are simply regurgitating information and then forgetting it. This will not stop being a problem because our exam methods will not change, they will continue to test students on their memorization and not their understanding. I believe a change in policy regarding this issue is needed because people are starting to move away from the more difficult courses. Often, when students have the option to choose a course, they choose something they think is easy because it's an easy transition. But when you enter the process of life what is rewarded is tenacity and your desire to face challenges. But in our system now students are pushed towards the easier path just to meet expectations. Another thing I would like to say is that students now focus too much on grades and less on what they are learning. I know this because as a student I am so fixated on grades and scholarships that I don't care what I'm learning, I simply care about the results I'm getting. They say school is to prepare our students for the future, but as I said before literally nothing has changed for hundreds of years, how can we prepare for the future if we are learning like the past? A teacher faces 25 students with different strengths and needs, teaching them the same things in the same way, but we don't need 25 identical students. Every single person on this earth deserves a chance at creativity. Works Cited Robinson, K. (2006). How schools kill creativity.
