I went to the zoo a few weeks ago and was watching the Rainforest Fights Back Show. You can tell whether the animal is happy or not by observing its facial expression and how it behaves. The animals that were performing didn't seem to be enjoying themselves. Their eyes were colorless and they looked tired. The bird flying from one side of the stage to the other almost fell onto the audience. Is it ethical to keep animals in zoos? There are many reasons for and against zoos, and there are many perspectives on this issue, but in my opinion animals should not be kept in zoos. Say no to plagiarism. First, from an animal rights perspective, humans have no right to capture and raise animals. What makes humans have more power over animals? We are all living beings and we are on the same level. Secondly, animals can feel pressure and stress. Animals live. I am not an object to be looked at. They should not be confined in a small cage for people to stare at. According to KQED Education, “some studies have shown that reintroduced animals have high mortality rates because they are poorly adapted and lack the skills needed to survive in the wild.” Some zoos also provide entertainment and train animals to do stunts so they can entertain the public. It may sound wonderful, but the reality is that if the animal doesn't perform the trick right, trainers slap and punch them so they learn. I think this is barbaric. Imagine you are the animal. How would it feel to be hit by humans, just because you didn't do something correctly? What would it be like to live under pressure and fear? On the other hand, zoos keep animals safe. They feed the animals and give them spaces to live without worrying about predators and the winter season. Visitors also learn more about animals in zoos because they educate people. However, I don't think zoos really educate people. According to research conducted by PeTA, visitors usually stay near an animal for a few minutes and enjoy the animal, rather than receiving education about the animal. Animals in zoos are easier to contract various types of diseases because thousands of people surround the animal every day. Zoos may say they save endangered animals, but all that really matters is how much crowd the animal attracts. Furthermore, removing a certain species from the ecosystem can destroy the entire ecosystem. For example, the Bornean orangutan is not native to Singapore, but the Singapore Zoo is home to many of them. I firmly believe that national parks save all kinds of endangered animals in a less cruel way. Even if there are no shows or some kind of entertainment, people still visit national parks. Zookeepers don't care enough about animals. They are not robots, they have feelings. This is what zoos should really start worrying about. Works CitedBekoff, M. (2009). Should zoos exist?
