With the risk it poses to yourself and your loved ones, it doesn't seem worth it. Jack Katz explains the moral reasoning behind criminal behavior through Kats' theory of moral seduction. Katz illustrates four themes of the criminal lifestyle, the first of which is humiliation. Humiliation is described as a "profound loss of control over one's identity, or soul." Katz explains that for individuals to survive in these types of environments they must have constant battles of humiliation with each other. Sometimes men humiliate their family members after receiving humiliation all day at work (all men should be seen above women and children). Katz's second theme is righteousness. The purpose of righteousness is to hide the anger that can result from humiliation in a way seen as morally correct in the eyes of society. The third theme is the hard man, also known as the way of the hard man. It is important for gang members to look like a tough man. This can be done by fighting, committing crimes, or even killing opposing gang members. Finally there is the topic of hedonism, the part of life dedicated to the pursuit of pleasure. Criminals and gang members often find these pleasures of life in illegal behaviors such as assaults, thefts, drug abuse, etc. humiliation, the need for righteousness, strength and courage, as well as the hedonistic lifestyle, are four of the numerous reasons why these individuals continue to band together and maintain their criminality.
