Nurses can increase their power in several ways. The first way is through the professional unit. “The most powerful groups are the best organized and most united. The power of a professional organization is directly related to the size of its membership” (Catalano, 2012, p. 16). This is the point that says nurses need to belong to their national organization to increase power. Another way to gain power would be to engage in political action. This is necessary so that nurses can make the decisions they need to make in their practice. The third way to gain power is to gain a support network. “Part of the difficulty in establishing a nursing support network comes from the fact that nurses have not held high-level positions for very long” (Catalano, 2012, p. 17). In a couple of years, it will be easier for nurses to get support online. The final way to gain power is to demonstrate the characteristics of responsibility and professionalism (Catalano, 2012). Nursing has raised this bar by raising the standards for high-quality health care and providing peer reviews and evaluations. This gives nurses the power to govern nursing away from non-nursing
