Topic > Symbolism of Young Goodman Brown - 776

Ironically his name stands for "trust in God", but his main conflict in the story is his absolute need to reside in the Devil. The reader is first introduced to her as she wears a bright ribbon on her head and recites kind and meaningful words to Goodman Brown. The entire story revolves around Goodman Brown soliciting and resisting the temptation of the Devil, essentially for his wife. However, when Goodman Brown hears Faith's screams in the forest and meets her at the ceremony, his only hope fades. This is prevalent in the following story quote; "My faith has disappeared!", he shouted, after a moment of amazement. There is nothing good on earth, and sin is but a name. Come on, devil! because this world has been given to you. (Hawthorne 331) When young Goodman Brown realizes that the only hope he had for good (faith) itself contains an inner darkness, he immediately loses the last ounce of hope he had.
