Canada as a country is always changing. Whether it's government, physicality, entertainment or economics, Canada is a nation that prides itself on being unique and receptive to change. But when do these advances, these anomalies compared to neighboring countries, begin to diminish us as a homeland? Or is there always a silver lining to the refinements and revisions Canada continues to make? Would this question be easier to answer if the consequences of our decisions about change were now life or death? For most, this makes things even more complicated. However, the issue of capital punishment is an issue that countries, including Canada, have continued to agonize over for decades. So in what sense are capital punishment and execution a good thing, and is there a line that must first be crossed to classify the guilty? These questions have crossed the minds of government and politicians in the past, and for now Canada finds itself on the opposite side of the incredibly blurry line, but as an ever-changing country, Canada should and can ever reinstate the death penalty ? The death penalty, also often called capital punishment, is the sentence of committing a crime. The most common crime referred to as a “capital crime” is murder and, more specifically, first-degree murder. In the United States, there have been only two cases in which the convicted person was not responsible for a murder (Death Penalty Information Center, 2010). In one such case, Patrick Kennedy was found guilty of aggravated sexual assault against his stepdaughter in 2003, and is now awaiting execution for his actions (Death Penalty Information Center, 2010).
