Hoping for the best but expecting the worst, I entered English not knowing what to expect. English 111 was boring at times but in many ways useful. The primary goal of University Composition is to teach students the fundamentals of academic writing and critical thinking. Apart from learning to write academically, recognizing grammatical errors, tone, and different styles like MLA, APA, and CMS, are some other things learned in the course. This essay will evaluate the book as a whole, the self-reflections, the essays, my strengths and weaknesses, and my professor. Every English 111 textbook should consist of three main things: the correct way to write an academic essay, review of proper grammar, mechanics of word usage, and a short transition chapter on the difference between writing in high school and writing in high school. university. Successful College Writing by Kathleen T. McWhorter has many of the essential elements but noted that it lacked examples of a noble essay. Throughout the lesson students critiqued essays but never actually saw an example of a good, noteworthy complete essay. Having examples of what a person should not do in an essay is always helpful, but it should be followed by a precise academic essay. How should students improve their academic writing skills if they have nothing to go on? Just because the book is missing some of the basic essentials doesn't mean that the book itself won't be useful in any way. The book as a whole is enjoyable but still has room for revisions. The four articles I self-reflected on are titled A Brush with Reality: Surprises in the Tube, Snoopers at Work, A Secret Life on the McJob: Fast Food Managers, and Shitty First Drafts. I kind of liked all the articles, but... half of the paper... you want to improve your academic writing, not if you need to learn different writing formats or need assistance with grammar. Writing this Evaluative Essay is beneficial to both the teacher and the TCC English Department. The teacher because she had given us the opportunity to criticize her and tell her about the strengths and weaknesses of her teaching; it benefited the English department because now they know how effective the textbook is and how effective this course is for the students who actually take it. Because I had a teacher willing to help when needed, English 111 wasn't as difficult as others made it out to be. I had a good professor, peers, and the writing center to help me with this course. I hope to continue to be successful in the second part of the course. Even though I don't like writing essays, this is an essay I enjoyed writing.
