“I don't know many parents who want to give their kids soda, but high fructose corn syrup is cheap. The price of soda has fallen by 40% in 20 years, while the price of whole foods, fruits and vegetables, has increased by 40% and obesity rises along that curve” (Tom Colicchio). Childhood obesity is a serious medical condition that affects children and adolescents. We live in a world where our children can walk out of school and into a McDonald's. Where soda companies make millions of dollars a year by installing soda vending machines in schools. A world where people die faster from childhood obesity than from smoking. No matter how much we try to avoid the topic, it has a huge effect on children and their parents. Parents have a huge influence on their children's eating behaviors that can prevent or reduce the risk of obesity. Therefore, fast food advertising has no effect on childhood obesity. Children who don't get enough sleep, not fast food ads, cause childhood obesity. Jeff Barnes states, “studies show that when a person is sleep deprived they are at risk of becoming overweight or obese” (paragraph 2). Jeff Barnes said that when a baby doesn't sleep, it affects two hormones, ghrelin and leptin. These two hormones are what fill a person up and keep them away from food. So, when a baby doesn't get enough sleep, he or she continues to get hungrier and hungrier. “308 children in Louisville, KY, ages 4 to 10, had a bracelet that monitored their sleep” (Dr. Mercola para. 4). The results show that children who sleep less are 4.2 times more likely to become obese.
