A convention of society All we do is to please someone else. And that someone else can be the whole of society. Society is based on conventions. Most of society conforms to them, otherwise they might seem “outside” the society they live in, they might even seem eccentric or dangerous to the “norm” of their society. These conventions are general agreements about social behavior; they have a strong force within the society. This is stated by Frye in his speech “The Educated Imagination” where he states that “There is clearly a strong force tending toward conformity in society, so strong that it appears to have something to do with the stability of society itself.” (35) We conform to please others, this is what creates “stability” within society. However, if people do not conform to the “norm,” they are often expelled from it, unless they conform to various socially acceptable conventions, such as becoming a nun. Makeup is one of the strongest conventions of this society. In the Western worldview, as a whole, the convention that beauty is a youthful appearance, "improved" features of a person, so without it you have to try to achieve it, this is done mainly by wearing makeup. This company believes that skin should have a smooth appearance and eyes should be framed to stand out. Many people have conformed to this, and saying that there are degrees of conformity may or may not be right. You cannot partially comply. Many things are not black and white, but conformity may not be, it has no gray area. You conform like others or you don't. There may not be a gray area but there may be a fence, when you are not sure what you think or feel. There is a transition phase where people need to explore both sides of the convention, but not everyone enters this phase. According to the statement that people go out of their way to please everyone else; wearing makeup means giving yourself a visually positive appearance so that others are satisfied with your appearance. This way you are more likely to attract the opposite sex. This is especially true for women in this society.
