Indeed they are complementary on many levels. Where transformation is focused on the organization, the servant leader is focused on the people of the organization. Both are working to make the organization better than before. Servant leadership is not about directing or controlling, but about “motivating and facilitating service and stewardship.” (Stone) Transformation relies on charisma to “gather influence and motivate followers.” (Stone) Both get results from their people and for their organizations. As organizations look for leaders to lead them deeper into the 21st century, they must remember that the best metric is success. New leaders must be smart, adaptable and creative in an ever-diverse workforce. These competing demands require a leader who can address both the external needs of the organization and the needs of those who comprise the organization. When followers recognize that leaders care about their needs, those followers produce more and have less turnover. Both servant and transformational leadership provide leaders with the tools to achieve this goal. Therefore they are viable leadership styles for the 21
