Throughout the novel, The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, Richard Stevenson creates a story that undermines the man's innocence through the use of nuance allegorical. The story is known for its dual personality theme of evil versus good, a human trait instilled in everyone. A 1941 film adaptation gives Stevenson's story a new perspective. The director introduces a love story that helps highlight the fragility of man. Through the interpretation of the film the audience gets a different idea of what man can be and by using Dr. Jekyll's perspective it helps the audience build a connection. All human beings have fragilities, but some try harder than others to hide them. Throughout the novel Stevenson brings the ugly truth of human nature to the surface. The same plot is depicted in the 1941 film adaptation starring Spencer Tracy, but this time intertwined with a love element. This helps develop a connection with the audience as most human beings believe, “It is better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all” (Alfred Lord Tennyson). This proves that humans crave a romantic connection. The fear of being alone is overwhelming in itself. Dr. Jekyll, played by Spencer Tracy, has a love interest he would do anything for. Jekyll's goodness is shown through the care and affection he gives to Beatrice. “There's nothing about you I don't like,” Jekyll says to Beatrice (Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, 1941). And when Jekyll is the good version of himself, he wouldn't dare do anything to hurt or upset her. But when Dr. Jekyll is his degenerate self, it is evident that love melts away, as if it had never existed. Instead, Hyde seeks power and control over a former bartender, Ivy. The element of love helps to portray that going... middle of paper....... Even though it is a human instinct and every man is capable of it, the struggle is trying to hide it. Richard Stevenson made it evident through his story of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde that the duality of human beings exists. It's as if each of us has a dual personality and is in a constant struggle between both. The 1941 film adaptation creates a different love element. It helps create a more engaging storyline, which helps the audience relate. Through two different perspectives of both Mr. Utterson and Dr. Jekyll himself, it gives the story a new component and allows the audience to immerse themselves in the evil and good within us.
