Today, Zambian manufactured products are traded only in the domestic economy and compete with products imported from Asia. Zambia still lacks technologies and skilled labor capable of processing raw materials to produce manufactured goods while maintaining costs as competitive and quality as high as imported goods. For this reason, Zambia exports a large part of the raw materials it produces to countries that have sufficient equipment to process them throughout the entire production chain. For example, considering Zambia's cotton production, three-quarters of all raw cotton is exported and only one-quarter is processed and marketed domestically (Dinh 37). The final product from this quarter has lower quality and higher price than imported products (Dinh 37). Investment in new technologies and labor education to lower production prices and increase product quality can develop the manufacturing sector because Zambian products could be marketed internationally.
